Maybe learning video game guitar tabs won't impress your girlfriend, but it will be fun and awesome for us fans of old-school video games! Learn songs from Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and more!

Why learn songs from old video games on your guitar?

Learning video game themes is fun. For me, I love figuring out how to play the parts on guitar in ways that sound authentic and work as a guitarist. Duplicating old MIDIs on the guitar is not always easy!

To make the transcription process easier, I used slow-down software to pick out the parts and make 100% sure they are correct. You can do this yourself if you own the right slow-down software. It's well worth it.

I hope you get a little bit sentimental when learning our video game tabs. If you grew up playing video games on platforms like NES, than learning these old hits on your guitar will be twice the fun.

I laugh at myself when I think about it, though. What's more ultimately nerdy than sitting there playing your guitar along to a video game? It's OK to laugh. It's better not to take yourself too seriously.

When you take yourself too seriously on guitar, you will have less fun. What's the point in that? Learn about my guitar philosophy. I don't take myself seriously. I just try to have a good time, play the best I can, I continue to improve until I die.

From a teaching perspective, everyone loves learning video game guitar tabs. It always livens up the mood to teach a video game theme during a lesson. It makes things more fun. More fun for myself as well as my student.

Castlevania music

Some of the most awesome video game tabs to learn come from the Castlevania series. On top of being some of my favorite games of all time, they provide challenging guitar parts for us to learn and shred on.

One reason these tabs are tricky is because they were not written for guitar. They were written for a cheesy version of a MIDI organ or something. Either way, it's hard to duplicate on guitar. You'll find lots of finger tapping in these tabs.

Simon says:

"Nathan's favorite Castlevania themes come from Simon's Quest. It's the second Castlevania. He remembers punching in the "get everything" code and blasting straight through the game in one sitting with his twin brother as a youngster. Fire whip all the way through, baby!"

Final Fantasy music

I'm such a Final Fantasy nerd I actually have a tattoo from Final Fantasy VIII on my left arm.

Final Fantasy music on guitar is more laid back. It's easier to orchestrate parts for the guitar that work melodically. Many themes from these games will be easier to play than our Castlevania themes.

When you grew up spending eye-reddening hours on end playing Final Fantasy, you aren't going to forget the songs that drill themselves constantly into your subconscious. These tunes are sure to bring back memories!
