Most of our sweep picking exercises outline a chord by stacking its scale degrees in an arrangement that creates a visual shape on the fretboard, this is commonly referred to in music theory as triads. Training yourself to SEE the shape is the first step to unlocking your awesome sweeping skills.
To make a good sweep pattern on the fretboard, visualize some of the open chords that you already know as movable shapes that go up and down the neck. You will have to make a barre where the open notes would be to fully see the shape.
To really play guitar fast, you will have to memorize only six shapes: three majors and three minors. That's right! Sweep picking only uses just six basic shapes! Easy!
The chord chart below lists all six shapes for sweeping. Memorize them now!

This first exercise shows little three string versions of the six primary triads listed above, both in their major and minor formats. In the examples, I use E Minor for the three minors and D Major for the three majors.
Thing 1: Always follow the correct right hand direction which is established below the first bar of each example and continues throughout the pattern.
Thing 2: Whenever you sweep through a pattern, only fret the notes one at a time. Don't just hold the shape like you would a chord. It is very important that you roll through the shape!

You may expand all of the six shapes to include the fourth string. Example 2 shows all six shapes using the top four strings for slightly bigger sweeps.

All five string examples include an extra hammer note on the fifth string. This makes an arpeggio that fits perfectly into an even rhythmic grouping of notes.
You may add another note to the bottom of the sweep by placing it conveniently on the fifth string. Example 3 demonstrates both major and minor variations of these yet bigger sweep patterns.

To really get the most out of your right hand technique, you can extend these massive sweeps all the way down to the sixth string. In Example 4, we will learn six-string sweeps in all six voicings of both the major and minor arpeggios.
Like the five-string examples, we need to an extra hammer/pull-off note on certain strings to make them more playable and applicable to an "even" time signature.
