So, why would I want to play guitar like Nathan anyway? (besides wanting to be really awesome and good...)

nathan mcdonald Nathan McDonald, in all His glory. Your teacher and
Lead guitarist of Halo Stereo

Nathan's answer: Well, you shouldn't want to play just like me. Learning how to play guitar really well is about drawing from many different sources. One of your biggest sources is learning from other guitar players.

I don't think that I'm better than anyone else. That is not my goal. But I know that learning from others is a big part of why I play like I do today.

If not to be better than others, what should my goal be as a guitarist?

To be your own best. The only person you should constantly try to be "better than" is yourself. The way to do that is to surpass your own best on a regular basis.

But to do that you need inspiration. You need to draw from other guitarists that may have already achieved certain abilities that you want.

You should want to have fun. Why play guitar if not for the simple fun and enjoyment of the activity itself?

But just like anything else in life, it's the most fun when you set goals and achieve them...

So it should be more like a conjoined effort as opposed to a competition?

That's what sets music apart from things that rely on competing to win. The only way the guitar community is going to become healthy is if we learn to be inspired by and appreciate the achievements of other guitar players, learning from each other's unique style and ability.

It's supposed to be fun, remember?

I don't take myself that seriously on guitar and I don't claim to be "better than" anyone else. I don' want you to think that way either. I want you to put your fingers on the fretboard and learn something new.

Once you free your mind from the insanely negative, individualistic ultimate-guitar/YouTube mentality of having to be the best, better than everyone else, just to show off and soothe your ego while flaming others, you realize that guitar really is fun and you can be just as good, if not even better than ever before, with this new mentality.

If you still haven't gotten what I'm trying to say: go to YouTube now and type in something like "insane guitar solo". Browse the results until you find someone that is "better than" you. How do you feel? Inspired? Jealous? Angry! ;)

If you keep a lighthearted attitude towards your guitar skills, it will be fun. You may want to actually sit down and learn from the video. The result? You get better! But with a good attitude.

So I shouldn't lock myself in my closet and pretend other guitarists don't exist?

Of course not! I believe each guitar player has his or her own unique voice. This unique voice is a combination of what you have learned from others, funneled through your own subconscious.

...but without getting too new-agey on you...

...You find you own unique voice on the guitar by learning from as many other players as possible (famous or not), making a soup out of it, and seeing what pops out of your subconscious when you play and create.

That is how music evolves through generations. Styles get passed down and new ones get created. So you should look for a balance. Learn from others AND try to create your own sound, style, and tricks.

Don't keep it a secret though! Don't squander your original guitar tricks like gold. Share them with the guitar community freely. If you are allowing your playing style to grow and change, you will perpetually create more uniqueness as you go anyway.

Does all this mean that I can never show off?

You got me. Yes, a little showing off is cool! ;) There is nothing wrong with being a little proud of your achievements and showing them off in a playful way. It's like a guitar duel. Even if the nature of the game itself is to have the best licks, it should be with a fun attitude.

OK...I'm inspired! How do I play guitar like Nathan McDonald?

Here are some crazy guitar solos that I put together for you to learn "my style" from. My style tends to feature a ton of odd time signatures, shred guitar techniques, and whatever else I come up with. Have fun!
