But, learning the guitar fretboard has the power to "unveil" the darkness, to provide you with the "roadmap" you need to navigate your way flawlessly around your guitar's neck!

Notes on the guitar -- It's less complicated than you might think!

As you know, there are only twelve notes. The great thing about guitar is that they repeat themselves every 12 frets...

Less to memorize!

In addition, each note can be found in multiple locations on the guitar fretboard. This is what separates stringed instruments, such as guitar, from the piano...

...on the piano, there is only one place to play each individual note. On the guitar, there are as many as six!

BUT, it gets easy with practice. Let's check out some examples...

Learning the guitar fretboard

Your guitar fretboard is a map -- so you need to learn your way around if you want to make progress...

...Which means it's time to learn a little theory...don't worry, it won't hurt too bad!

Notes come in "intervals." An interval stands for how far apart the notes are. Most notes (for our purposes) are two frets apart on the neck.

Some notes are only one fret apart. (Look at B to C, then look at E to F)

All other notes have a fret between them -- No exceptions!

What are those "empty" frets called? Simple, they are "sharp" notes. You can also call them "flat", depending on your song, but let's use the term "sharp" to keep it simple.

Now that we have established some ground rules to learning the guitar fretboard, let's look at a complete guitar fretboard chart.

Once again, see how the note names on fret 12 are an exact copy of the notes on 0? This special interval -- remember intervals? -- is called an "octave", and it represents a distance of 12 frets.

Ooga Booga says:

"Focus on memorizing your notes from 0 to 12 one string at a time! One day at a time!"

Remember those "empty" frets, the ones we referred to as sharp notes? Well, those are easy! Just add a "sharp" to any note (except B and E) and you will have a complete set of notes on the guitar!
