Lead Guitar Speed Drills: Chromatic Drills

The "Famous" Four Finger Exercise

Among all lead guitar speed drills and guitar exercises, the four finger exercise is one of the most effective and easy to learn!

This guitar drill is a basic finger pattern that implements all four of your fingers one at a time using all possible combinations and spans four adjacent frets. Refer to the table below to learn the various finger combinations, then traverse through each string using each pattern separately.

For example, the tablature below shows the combination in the first box (top-left in the table), starting at the first fret using your first finger. For variety, you should go down through all six strings, move up a fret, then use the same combination going UP the strings. Continue the pattern all the way up the neck, then choose a new combination from the table and start over.

All finger number combinations (numbers represent finger numbers, not fret numbers):

1234 1243 1324 1342 1423 1432
2134 2143 2314 2341 2413 2431
3124 3142 3214 3241 3412 3421
