One of the most effective things you can ever do as a guitar player is to figure out songs by ear. Don't just rely on the Internet for your TABS! It may take hours upon end of hitting "back" on your iPod, but it will be WELL worth the effort in the long run!
TRY THIS! See if you can figure out the chords used in the following progression. Click on the sound player to have a listen...
If you are having trouble transcribing songs by ear, try the following software. It will make this daunting task MUCH easier!
Want to learn how to play any song, at any speed, just by listening to it?
Are some guitar tabs too fast for you? Slow any song down using RiffMaster Pro!
Imagine being able to figure out any song, at any speed, using your own ear! With RiffMaster Pro, it becomes easy to transcribe your own songs and learn any guitar solo, no matter how fast!
It's the easiest way to play any song you want -- just by playing what you hear!
One of the MOST effective lead guitar secrets is to play OTHER instruments on your guitar! The thing about doing this is that your voicing, style, and HOW YOU PLAY IT is entirely up to you. This little trick will help you find YOUR unique voice as a lead guitarist by forcing you to use your own technique and finger positions.
TRY THIS! Listen to the saxophone solo in Pink Floyd's "Money". See how many notes you can figure out on your guitar!
The most memorable guitar solos are melodic, catchy, and "singable". The best way to learn how to play guitar solos that are tasteful is to figure out catchy vocal melodies on your guitar. After you get it figured out in a position that is playable, try adding "guitar-specific" techniques such as string bends, hammer ons, pull offs, and slides for unique FLASH and FEEL!
TRY THIS! Look at piano song books and learn the vocal lines (they should be on TOP, above the right hand). Then try figuring out your own!
Here is something that OTHER free guitar tutorials won't tell you: Take a break, go on a hike, go to a concert, just put your guitar down for a while! When you get back to the guitar after an extended absence, you will approach it with fresh eyes and fingers. This method can be very helpful if you find yourself "stuck" in the common rut of playing the same licks over and over after reaching a certain plateau of ability.
TRY THIS! Actually, there is nothing to try! Just stop practicing guitar for awhile!
ARNOLD! says:
"How FAST you can play guitar solos is often a reflection of your physical STRENGTH! I "strongly" suggest exercising your arms and upper body using weight training methods, pushups, and pull ups! Grab a Men's Health Magazine and start your workout routine NOWLL!!"
TRY THIS! Grab some 15-25lb dead weights and do hammer curls with them. Make Arnold PROUD! (Don't hurt yourself! Consult your doctor, or Arnold, before starting any form of strenuous exercise regimen)
Lacking "chops" can hold you back from doing what you hear in your head (OTHER than the voices!) "Chops" are how good you are. Practice the 5 Lead Guitar Speed Drills You Should Use Every Day To Get Faster, Better, and More Accurate on a regular basis.
There are no "lead guitar secrets" that replace the value of PRACTICE! If you lack motivation, read Practice Secrets for the Ultimate Guitar Practice Routine!

Guitar makes scales easy because it turns them into a simple pattern you can memorize easily! Run your guitar scales, especially the ones in "guitar" keys such as G/Em, C/Am, and F/Dm. Once you feel good about these scales, modify them by adding notes from the seven modes. Start with "Dorian" mode as it is more common in guitar solos. QUICK! What are the fret numbers in the key of 'E' Minor going up the third string from frets 0 to 12?
Not sure? Start learning your guitar scales!
TRY THIS! Use these linear scale exercises to memorize the notes on a single string, such as the ones above in the key of 'E' Minor:
