Guitar truss rod adjustment

What is a truss rod?

All electric (and most acoustic) guitars have a metal rod implanted down the length of the neck. It's on the inside so you can't see it!

If you look close, you'll see a hole at one end of your neck. It's there to make adjustments on your truss rod...

What is the truss rod for?

Your truss rod is there to help make sure the neck stays straight. If your neck is bowed, you'll use the truss rod to bend your guitar's neck back into place...sound rough huh?

It may be necessary to adjust your guitar's truss rod under the following conditions:

  • You have experienced a strong climate change
  • Your guitar's neck is obviously bowed
  • You have tried all other options and you still experience problems

But first you should ask yourself: Is guitar truss rod adjustment really necessary?

You want to make sure you have exhausted all other guitar setup options first!

Before turning your truss rod, make sure you:

ARNOLD says:

"Check your guitar's intonation and action before all else! Don't just start turning away on the truss rod!"

Done? Good! Now let's start looking at how to adjust the truss rod...

Effective-lead-guitar.com highly recommends that you take your guitar to a professional should you wish to have the truss rod adjusted! Although it can be performed at home, turning the truss rod too far in one direction can BREAK your guitar! If it feels too hard to turn, STOP! Ask a professional to do it for you! ;)

The truss rod can be turned two ways: one way bends the neck outward, the other way bends the neck inward.

Truss rod cover

To access your truss rod, you may have to remove a small cover. This will be located on your guitar's head. Some truss rod's are adjusted from the other end, in which case there won't be a cover, but it may be hidden under the pick guard.

Pull off the cover and expose the truss rod.

Truss rod wrench

Many guitars are equipped with truss rods that can only be adjusted with a special wrench...wonder why! ;)

If you bought your guitar new it should have one that came with it. If not, you may need to special order one.

In my lifetime as a professional musician and career guitar player, I have only ever turned my truss rod one time -- and even then I probably didn't need to!

The advice I give most is to look for other less complicated ways to get your guitar set up perfectly. If you exhaust all other options, it's most likely that you won't even have to mess with the truss rod at all!
