Guitar practice tips

Using the right practice habits when playing guitar will ensure that you get the most out of your practice session. After all, most people practice guitar for only a few reasons. If not simply just for fun, a personal challenge, or some ultimate goal of becoming the next Steve Vai, why play guitar at all?

Of course, this can be true for any human activity. Whether it's a hobby that pleases you or a profession you take seriously, becoming your own best at the activity is always a fun project. You get to grow and develop at something you enjoy doing anyway!

That's where true skill comes from. Anyone you perceive to be a "master" at the art of guitar has most certainly put in more hours than they could count if they wanted to. Days and years go by, and each passing year seasons the guitarist, honing his or her skills, and eventually it's like second nature.

Provided you actually want to practice hard, play guitar for fun, and become your own best, it's HOW you practice that counts. Follow the tips below to make sure you get the most out of your guitar practice sessions:

Guitar practice habits

First, avoiding a few bad habits will get you pointed in the right direction. It's hard to move too far forward without getting rid of some bad guitar playing habits here and there!

Using warm-up exercises is one of the best guitar practice tips I can give you!

I used them every day for about a year.

You can even make up your own guitar drills. Just come up with something, a pattern or scale-based riff, and play it over and over again, until you get tired. That's all it comes down to; repetition is king.

Repeating something difficult over and over creates muscle memory. Muscle memory is something that is absolutely necessary for shredding like the pros. They all have it. You have to create it by using repetition.

Using a metronome

If you're not practicing to a metronome, you're missing out on something very important.

I have seen too many people who have otherwise achieved greatness on guitar, but can't play in time!

These days, it's easy to download a good metronome app for your iPhone or whatever.

You have to practice playing all those solos, speed drills, and whatever else in perfect time to your metronome.

Besides, if you ever get into recording and doing studio sessions, you will absolutely be required to play in perfect time. That is, unless computers take over and fix everything that isn't played good enough...

Let's keep our fingers crossed that human skill will actually count for something in the coming decades...

Play something really hard...

...but play it really slow. Take that impossible solo that you thought you would never learn. Play it at half speed using your metronome. Repeat a couple bars 100 times. Then play the next couple bars 100 times. You should have it memorized by now. Then increase your metronome by about 10 BPM and do it again.

Practicing guitar correctly

Practicing guitar correctly is great, but what really makes the difference is how much time you put in. You get out what you put in. It's the same as working out by lifting weights, it only makes a difference if you do it enough. So get to it!

Think about this: one day, if you live long enough, you won't be able to play guitar anymore anyway. At least not as good as you can now. So appreciate it while you can and keep it fun. Guitar is just a piece of wood, and it only come to life in your hands.
