The ultimate lead guitar essentials package is here: Four complete lead guitar lesson eBooks covering all your guitar soloing needs.
We cover everything a lead guitarist needs, from just starting out playing guitar solos all the way to advanced lead guitar technique...
These simple guitar licks will give you an idea of what it's like to play lead guitar. Once you get these basic riffs down, you won't be far off from playing real lead guitar solos.
Many guitar solos are made using the guitar licks we will be learning below, just maybe a little bit faster. Learning lead guitar is a journey unto itself. It takes patience and tons of practice. So if you are new to lead guitar, this is the perfect place to start!
Learning how to play lead guitar is all about leaning and memorizing short licks, putting them together, and playing with them to create your own versions of the licks, eventually making up your own licks and solos for improvisation.
You'll notice various lead guitar techniques throughout our tablature. Lots of what is known as "legato guitar" will be used. You'll recognize these as hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides.
Also, learning a thing or two about string bending will help you on your adventurous lead guitar travels!
Ooga Booga says:
"Tons of guitar solos are based on the pentatonic blues scale. Think of it as your foundation for writing and performing rock guitar solos. If you don't know much about guitar scales, they are kind of like an agreed upon set of notes that you can play within to make sure your solo sounds good ;)"
Just playing through our easy guitar licks will give you a feel for what the pentatonic blues scale feels like. You should see commonalities between the licks. Many of them use the same notes.
I once had a student say to me "you know, you don't have to play so fast!" It sounds hilarious, but there was some truth to what he was saying. Instead of sitting there and shredding away without reservation like I usually do, I contemplated that it's OK to sit back and play licks that are tasteful and more "singable".
...people outside the guitar community tend to tire of endless shredding eventually. They will thank you!
Blues guitar is a great place to start learning lead guitar for these reasons: it's relatively easy, it's basic, yet it still has feeling and taste.
Now, is blues my preferred style of playing? No, but I recognize the value of learning it early on as a foundation for more complicated styles. Get that pentatonic blues scale down. That is the first step.
When we go through these next few licks, try to memorize them as you go. Try playing them slow, medium, and fast. Try playing them along to some music in your iTunes library. You never know what could come of it. As long as you are having fun it doesn't matter. Learning guitar is supposed to be fun.
If you complain that they are too easy, turn your guitar around and play them left-handed (right-handed if you are left-handed).
Now let's get to the licks:
These licks can be played in any song in the key of A Minor. If you have a friend, have him or her strum the Am chord while you solo over it using our licks below. The two of you playing together should create some cool harmonies. Then if you want you can trade off.
If you only friend is your computer, you can play to this simple backing track: The tempo is 100 BPM. The chord is Am.
