Advanced shred guitar technique involves sweep picking, finger tapping, legato techniques, and fast picking. To really shred guitar fast, you will need to master each of these techniques...A hang up on just one of them can slow you down fast.
Luckily this advanced shred guitar lesson is here to help!
We will cover all the famous shred guitar tricks all in one shred-packed lesson. We will have tons of tabs to play through during the lesson, so have your guitar ready.
To define "Shred Guitar", we can say it is fast, fast, and fast. Many of us fast guitar players learn regular guitar solos and speed them up, playing them as fast as possible.
It may be more effective to learn neoclassical techniques and the top 10 guitar solos of all time. Whatever we learn, we will benefit from it and take it with us on our guitar-slinging journey.
"What's the point?" you ask...
If you needed a reason to shred, you wouldn't be here learning how to do it. You either have the drive to play as fast as you can or you think it's a pointless, mindless activity for those addicted to guitar scales.
In the end it doesn't matter what you believe about fast guitar playing -- you can learn a thing or two by trying out the lesson below no matter how you feel!
The point is to have fun.
This first advanced shred guitar section makes heavy use of sweep picking. Sweep picking is essential to learning shred guitar, so get ready to practice!
Think about the chord shape that each sweep pattern makes. It's always a familiar chord, such as E minor, A minor, or B minor. Try to find those shapes by visualizing them within the patterns.
The key to sweep picking really fast is seeing the chord shapes.Click tablature to enlarge:

In this finger tapping example, we are going to mix things up a little bit. Instead of just a bunch of finger tapping as usual, we will mix in some riffing to make things more original.
This is the kind of finger tapping you might hear being used by a progressive metal band. It's more of a modern metal guitar riff than a cliche' guitar solo from the 80's.
We have to move past the out-dated idea that a song needs a "guitar solo" and start thinking in terms of soloing constantly. The whole song is your solo!
