About electric guitar pickups

What makes an electric guitar...electric?

Easy... You plug it in!

But without pickups, there would be no way to carry the sound from the guitar to the amplifier!

The job of your guitar pickups is simple: "pick up" the sound of your vibrating electric guitar string and carry it out to your amp. Your pickups use special coils made of wire to detect the vibration of the strings when you strum them. Isn't electricity awesome!

Guitar pickups come in all shapes and sizes. The most common types are Single Coil and Humbucker.

Fender guitar pickups

Fender guitar pickups are versatile and common. Your guitar might even have a similar layout...

Fender guitar pickups are single coil. There are 3 of them:

  • One near the bridge
  • One in the middle
  • And one near the neck

Why do you have 3 different pickups on your guitar?

It gives you diversity. Each selection of pickups gives you a whole different tone!

Guitar pickups selector switch

Your selector switch has 5 positions. Each position activates a unique pickups combo. Remember this:

  • Position 1 (down, or nearest to the floor) = ONLY the bridge pickup
  • Position 2 (just move it up one click) = the bridge pickup AND the middle pickup
  • Position 3 (it's in the middle) = ONLY the middle pickup!
  • Position 4 = the middle pickup AND the neck pickup
  • Position 5 = you guessed it -- ONLY the neck pickup!

You can use each of these settings to your advantage to get the best sound for your solo or riff!

Experiment with all the various settings. Try playing solos and guitar riffs using different guitar pickup combinations. See what sounds you can come up with!

Guitar pickup tone

Your guitar pickup tone is 90% of a great guitar sound that is unforgettable -- that's why it's so important!

It's easy if you follow this rule: the more you go towards the neck pickup, the more bass your tone will have...

...the more you go towards the bridge pickup, the more treble your tone will have...

Adjusting electric guitar pickups

YES! Electric guitar pickups can safely be adjusted to further customize your tone!

CAUTION: Do NOT loosen the screw carelessly! If you unscrew your guitar pickup screws too far, the pickup will drop down into the body of the guitar and you will probably not have a fun time trying to get it back into place! ;)

That being said, you can raise or lower your pickups by turning the screws -- there are two, one on top and one on bottom -- to your liking. Can you hear a difference in sustain? Attack?

If you aren't sure, just give them a happy medium between your strings and body...
